Statement of Artistic Intent
Photography is a reflection of how I process the world around me yet at the same time my escape from it. It allows my mind to take a break from the stresses of the world. The current world health crisis has caused me to reflect more deeply on the fragility and adaptability of life and how our experiences ripple through and shape our lives. I layer different photographic techniques because my photographs are not about one experience or moment but many moments compiled. I explore the boundaries of photography through the use of film photography, alternative process photography and digital photography. The different photographic processes blend together within the final photograph, making it difficult to discern between the processes. One process is not more important or authentic than another. Each component shapes the final image as our memories and experiences shape our frame of reference. I use a multifaceted approach to photography with the intent of creating dream-like images that visually resonate with the viewer to stir emotions, to feel immersed and contemplative. I hope to inspire the viewer to reflect upon their relationship to the natural world that is fragile and ephemeral.
As photographers, we all know the moments of excitement when we are finally able to see our physical image whether it is in the form of a developed negative, processed print or even on a computer screen. For me, making a photograph is a journey packed with many of these moments of excitement. It is this path of exploration that shepherds me to my final images. My photography is not merely about the final image but about the entire process that I embark to create my finalized product.
